Measurement
Learning Goal:
We are learning about the relationship between area and volume.
In this lesson, small groups were tasked to design a rectangular prism. Using Numberkiz Pro, they explained their thinking as they solved the surface area and volume of the 3D form. This clip illustrates that the students had a solid understanding of how to calculate surface area, but it also gave the class an opportunity to provide descriptive feedback to this group on how they seemed to forget about the "height" when solving for volume.
The students came to the conclusion that the answer, in this particular case, would not have changed, because the "height" of the prism was 1cm. We went on to experiment with a prism that had the same surface area, but was 2cm in height. The discussion was student-centred, and very much based on student inquiry and exploration. The students really enjoyed this lesson.

their understanding of shapes and patterns.
This student-led activity allowed small groups to share their thinking, while generating rich discussion about the patterns and symmetry that we discovered.
